WHY IT MATTERS

One Repair Bill Can Set Your Whole Year Back.

Modern vehicles are packed with sensors, computers, hybrid and EV components, and complex transmissions — parts that are expensive to diagnose and expensive to replace. Once your factory warranty expires, a single failure of the engine, transmission, electrical system, or climate control can easily run into the thousands. Mechanical Breakdown Protection covers the parts and labour to repair or replace those failed components at any licensed repair centre in Canada or the U.S., so you’re not choosing between the repair and the rest of your budget.

An interesting but alarming statisticAccording to a 2024 AAA study, the average unexpected vehicle repair now costs Canadian and U.S. drivers between $500 and $600 — and nearly one in three drivers can’t cover a repair of that size without going into debt.

Common Questions

Straight Answers.

Mechanical Breakdown Protection covers the parts and labour to repair or replace failed mechanical components on your vehicle after the factory warranty expires. What’s covered depends on the plan you choose: Coverage A protects the powertrain (engine, transmission, drivetrain); Coverage B covers everything except the powertrain (brakes, climate control, cooling, electrical, fuel, steering, suspension); Coverage C combines both into a complete plan. Every plan also includes rental reimbursement, towing, and trip interruption at no additional cost.

Take your vehicle to any licensed repair facility in Canada or the United States. Before work begins, the repair shop contacts Optiom’s claims line, and an Optiom claims representative reviews and authorizes the repair directly with the shop. You pay your $100 deductible; Optiom pays the shop for the rest, up to the coverage limit. You don’t need to submit paperwork or negotiate with anyone — the shop and Optiom handle it.

No. Mechanical Breakdown Protection is separate from your primary auto policy and doesn’t replace it. Your primary auto policy covers accidents, theft, weather damage, and third-party claims. Mechanical Breakdown Protection covers something your primary auto policy doesn’t — the cost of repairing or replacing components that fail on their own after your factory warranty ends. The two work independently and cover different things.

Yes. Under Coverage B and Coverage C, the plan covers the electric drive system, electric motor, power inverter, onboard charger and charging port, regenerative braking system, and HVAC — all included under the Electrical System component group. Coverage A (Powertrain only) is available for hybrid vehicles where the internal combustion engine is the primary drivetrain. Talk to your dealer about which plan fits your specific vehicle.

Your vehicle must be 9 model years old or newer, under 200,000 km on the odometer, with a purchase price between $10,000 and $200,000. Both new and pre-owned vehicles qualify. Personal-use and business-use vehicles are eligible; commercial use (rideshare, delivery fleet, taxi) is not covered. Your dealer can confirm eligibility on the specific vehicle you’re buying.

Coverage must be purchased within 30 days of vehicle delivery. The best time to ask about it is at the dealership when you’re closing on the vehicle — your F&I manager will add it to your paperwork right there. If you’ve recently taken delivery and haven’t yet enrolled, contact your dealership as soon as possible; once the 30-day window closes, the policy can no longer be added to that vehicle.
